Applications are invited for a limited term 12-month appointment in the Department of Music, at the Instructor level, effective July 1, 2012. This position is subject to budgetary approval. Duties will include, but are not limited to, teaching aural skills at 1st and 2nd – year levels, develop and teach a Preparatory year course (including keyboard skills, aural skills and theory), choral conducting of the Dalhousie Chamber Choir and Dalhousie Coro Collegium. If qualified, will also conduct the Dalhousie Orchestra and Dalhousie Opera Workshop.

Qualifications: MMUS or BMUS and equivalent professional experience; demonstrated successful teaching in the listed subjects; enthusiasm for teaching basic skills; evidence of professional experience and expertise in conducting standard choral literature, including major works with orchestra. Demonstrated professional excellence in orchestral and operatic conducting is desirable. The ability to work collegially with others is essential.

Lecturer/Assistant Professor, Music (Applied Voice) – July 1 2012 to December 31, 2012

The Department of Music at Dalhousie University invites applications for a 6‐month full‐time limited term appointment in Music (Applied Voice) at the Lecturer/Assistant Professor level, effective July 1, 2012. The position is subject to budgetary approval. The successful candidate’s duties may include, but are not limited to, teaching undergraduate voice students; coaching voice students in the Opera Workshop; sharing in departmental responsibilities; and performing in department events including the Faculty Chamber Series.

JOB: University of Waterloo--Global Music

The position is based at Conrad Grebel University College’s Music Department, the Music Department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. This is a regular, full-time, continuing contract position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level that involves undergraduate teaching, research, service, and community education. The general teaching area is Global Music which may include introductory Music courses, Popular Music and Culture, World Music, Music in Film, and other courses designed around the faculty member’s specific interests and expertise. Responsibilities may also include leadership of ensembles related to the faculty member’s areas of expertise.

Faculty Position Profile and Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who meet the following qualifications:


1.               A completed doctorate in Ethnomusicology, Musicology or another area of Music (with graduate work in Ethnomusicology)

2.               An ability and willingness to teach music courses in an interdisciplinary setting and to apply insights from a variety of disciplines to the study of music.

3.               An understanding of and commitment to the identity, mission and core values of Conrad Grebel University College, a Mennonite college at the University of Waterloo, home of the University’s Music Department  

4.               Demonstrated excellence in post-secondary teaching

5.               An active research program in Global Music that leads to regular publications and presentations.

6.               Willingness to share administrative duties within the Music department, at Conrad Grebel University College and at the University of Waterloo

7.               Willingness to function as a resource person and to engage with arts organizations, the University community,  the Mennonite community, and the general public in Global Music-related topics

8.               Evidence of a high level of competence in music performance or in leading global-music ensembles or groups is an asset.

 

Instructions and Information for Applicants

o       Names and contact information of three referees who have agreed to provide letters of recommendation and respond to questions from the search committee if requested. Referees should be ready to comment on the candidate’s scholarship, teaching competence, potential contribution to global music research, capacity for public service, and collegiality.

2.     All applications will be acknowledged and unsuccessful candidates will be informed as the process proceeds.

3.     A short list of candidates will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation and substantial documentation of teaching, research and service.  These candidates may be contacted for preliminary telephone or in-person interviews with members of the search committee, and they may also be asked to provide the names and contact information of additional referees to be contacted by the search committee. 

4.     Some candidates may be invited to campus in March – April 2012 for interviews and presentations to classes and various groups.

5.     During the search process the College reserves the right to withhold making a full-time appointment, to fill the position with a part-time or term appointment, or to extend the application process.

 

Appointment Procedures and Conditions

An initial appointment at the Assistant Professor level is normally made for a three year term, which, upon satisfactory review, is followed by a second three year term, after which the faculty member is eligible for consideration for continuing contract.  An initial appointment at the Associate Professor level is normally made for a three year term, after which, upon satisfactory review, the faculty member is eligible for consideration for continuing contract.

 

Background Information

Conrad Grebel University College’s Music Department is the Music Department of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Waterloo. The Department has offered courses and extra-curricular programs in Music at the University of Waterloo since the 1960s and since 1974 has offered Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music.

Global Music fulfills a critical mission at uWaterloo. The University has identified globalization as one of its critical growth areas during the current “Sixth Decade Plan”.

 

Global engagement, community building and active peacemaking are core values of the College. The college is building a Centre for Peace Advancement to create an innovative and interdisciplinary space to study, practice and perform peace. The Department of Music at Mount Allison University invites applications for a tenure-track position in music education and studio voice.

Candidates should have a completed doctorate and a demonstrated commitment to and record of successful teaching, creative activity, and research at the university level. Teaching experience in elementary or secondary schools as well as private voice instruction at the university level is desired. The successful candidate will teach courses in elementary and secondary music methods (combining general music/choral/instrumental), a senior seminar in music education, studio voice, and will act as a resource person in current music education issues. Other possible courses could include diction for singers or vocal methods/pedagogy. Candidates should exhibit an interest in nurturing the connections between the Music programs and the broader liberal education curriculum at Mount Allison. 

The appointment will be made at the rank of Lecturer or Assistant Professor and will be effective July 1, 2012, subject to budgetary approval.

Music Program – Head of Vocal Department

 

The Music Program is seeking a prominent Jazz/Contemporary musician to assume the position of Head of the Vocal Department.  Duties will include overseeing all aspects of the vocal program including recruitment and development of curriculum.  The applicant should have experience with all styles of contemporary music including Jazz, Country, Pop and Rock. A strong background in vocal technique as it applies to jazz and contemporary popular music is a necessity.  Responsibilities may include class instruction in improvisation, theory, ear training, history, and coaching small and large ensembles. The successful applicant must have a strong interest in teaching as a career priority and an ability to work in a collegial environment.

 

The Music program is situated within the faculty of the Centre for the Arts and Communications and is part of a vibrant arts community.  The Bachelor of Music degree builds on MacEwan’s reputation as one of the finest music schools in Canada, and runs concurrently with MacEwan’s acclaimed two year Music Diploma program.

 

This full time continuing position includes a full benefit package and will commence on June 15, 2012.  Candidates must have a minimum of a Masters degree (Masters in Music preferred). The successful candidate will be a high profile jazz/commercial educator with broad based professional experience as a performer and clinician/adjudicator, and will have demonstrated excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the diploma but degree courses may also be included.  A demonstration of research and professional accomplishments will be considered an asset.

This position is included under the Faculty Association Collective Agreement.
