The Ethnology and Cultural Studies Division is currently seeking a dynamic individual who will, under the supervision of the Director, Ethnology and Cultural Studies, examine, document, and communicate information to the public on music in Canada, past and present, particularly in its traditional and popular forms; curate exhibitions relating to music and contribute to other exhibitions as appropriate; contribute to collections development and public programming; undertake major research projects; communicate the results of this research to a variety of publics and through a variety of media, including scholarly publications and exhibitions; provide professional leadership and inform and influence a wide variety of audiences about music in Canada; and carry out other related duties, as required.
As the ideal candidate, you hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in Ethnomusicology, Folklore with a music specialization, or a related discipline.
You possess knowledge of:
- Music in Canadian life, particularly traditional and popular music;
- Scholarly research and research methods in Ethnomusicology, Folklore, and related disciplines;
- Collections relating to traditional and popular music, at Canadian Museum of Civilization and elsewhere;
- Issues relating to storage and retrieval in sound and music archives;
- Applied research in a museum environment.
You have three to five years experience in:
- Undertaking complex, in-depth ethnographic and document-based research;
- Writing scholarly books and articles, and communicating in other media;
- Presenting information through popular writing, lectures and exhibitions to the general public;
- Using museum and archival collections.
Since you will be working in a highly computerized environment, a demonstrated experience of word processing (Word), electronic spreadsheet (Excel), presentation (Power Point) and electronic mail (Outlook) is required.
