Department of Performance — Percussion and Contemporary Music Assistant Professor Position
The Schulich School of Music is Canada’s largest and most renowned university-based professional training program, and an international leader in music creation, performance, and research in music and sound. A Faculty of McGill University, one of the top research-intensive universities in the world, the Schulich School is also home to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT).
Applications are invited for a full-time tenure track appointment in Percussion and Contemporary Music in the Department of Performance at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning September 1, 2011 (initial 3-year tenure-track appointment).
Qualifications: International performance profile. Exceptional teaching, performance, and administrative skills. Ability to teach advanced percussion students through all university degree and diploma programs to the professional level. Expert knowledge of trends and issues in contemporary art music, including artistic applications of music technologies (e.g. real-time live electronics, digital musical instruments) both as a performer and, if possible, as a developer. Capacity to participate in and facilitate interdisciplinary collaborations and to obtain research funding. Ability to create links with the local contemporary music milieu, including fluency in French, is an asset, as is experience as a conductor of contemporary repertoire.
Duties: Teaching of undergraduate and graduate performance percussion students. Coordination and development of contemporary music activities in the Schulich School of Music, in collaboration with other Areas (e.g. Composition, Music Technology, CIRMMT). Graduate student supervision. Seminars on topics that may include ethnomusicology, critical thinking related to percussion performance, contemporary and traditional performance practice. Orchestral and contemporary music ensemble sectionals. Participation in the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology.

Salary is negotiable according to qualifications and experience. The position is subject to final budgetary approval.
