Welcome

I welcome you to the website of the Canadian University Music Society. CUMS is a bi-lingual scholarly society dedicated to the promotion of music in Canadian post-secondary institutions through a variety of activities: we sponsor an annual three-day conference in late May, publish a scholarly journal (Intersections: A Canadian Journal of Music) and provide support for music programs across the country through the Standing Committee of Institutional Members.

As the primary Canadian 'learned' association devoted to music, CUMS occupies a unique position within North American academe, since our members comprise musicologists, music theorists, ethnomusicologists, music educators and performers. Not unexpectedly, then, the society's professional activities cut across disciplinary divisions, which we believe constitutes one facet of our Canadian identity.

I invite you to explore CUMS through this website, which features more detailed information about the society, its journal and conferences, as well as membership details and links to other websites of interest. One new feature you should watch for in the coming months will be a link to reports that we used to publish in the hard-copy newsletter, now updated on a regular basis. Even as the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is encouraging Canadian scholarly societies to rely more upon web technology, CUMS is placing increasing importance on its representation and communication through our internet presence. Web Editor Mary Ingraham has done a terrific job in maintaining and updating the website, and yet she would be the first to admit that it is a work in progress, thus we welcome any input you might have regarding ways we can improve it.

Should you have questions about CUMS or any of its activities, please feel free to contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The 2010 conference of the CANADIAN UNIVERSITY MUSIC SOCIETY, in collaboration with the CANADIAN ASSOCIATION OF MUSIC LIBRARIES, ARCHIVES AND DOCUMENTATION CENTRES (CAML), will be held June 3−6 at the Department of Music, UNIVERSITY OF REGINA, in green and sunny Regina, Saskatchewan. You are invited to join your university-based colleagues in a relaxing atmosphere, to partake of concerts, recitals, a “great debate,” paper sessions and, of course, food.
